Born To Run: Transition to a forefoot striker

I recently finished to book Born to Run by Christopher McDougall and highly recommend it to anyone who loves running.

When I first began my transition into distance running which has been less than a year (July 2011 if I had to pick a specific period) I was bothered by leg pains and shin splints mainly due to my technique.  I remember I used to take off my shoes for the last 2-3 miles of my runs and it seemed to significantly reduce the impact and improve my technique.  Somewhere along the line I stopped running barefoot and I began to notice (December through current) that I started to become more sore and take more time to recover.  After reading Born to Run I have began to run barefoot and relearn my technique in order to prevent injury and lessen recovery time from long runs.  After the first few runs I have noticed different muscles (namely calf at this point) have been more sore and my knees seem to have been taking less of a beating.

I leave you with two great quotes from the book Born to Run:

"There are two Goddesses in your heart: the Goddess of Wisdom and the Goddess of Wealth.  Everyone thinks they need to get the wealth first, and wisdom will come.  So they concern themselves with chasing money.  But they have it backwards.  You have to give your heart to the Goddess of Wisdom, give her all your love and attention, and the Goddess of Wealth will become jealous, and follow you." --Joe Vigil

"If it feels like work you’re working too hard" --Eric Orton

The Best Drug & Most Widely Available FREE

What is the best drug in the world? Well it is actually FREE and readily available.  It is...drum roll please....Exercise.

At his research clinic in Dallas, psychologist Jasper Smits is working on an unorthodox treatment for anxiety and mood disorders, including depression. It is not yet widely accepted, but his treatment is free and has no side effects. Compare that with antidepressant drugs, which cost Americans $10 billion each year and have many common side effects: sleep disturbances, nausea, tremors, changes in body weight.
This intriguing new treatment? It's nothing more than exercise.

That physical activity is crucial to good health — both mental and physical — is nothing new. As early as the 1970s and '80s, observational studies showed that Americans who exercised were not only less likely to be depressed than those who did not but also less likely to become depressed in the future.

In 1999, Duke University researchers demonstrated in a randomized controlled trial that depressed adults who participated in an aerobic-exercise plan improved as much as those treated with sertraline, the drug that, marketed as Zoloft, was earning Pfizer more than $3 billion annually before its patent expired in 2006.

Don't ignore or discount this miracle cure. Among the many benefits of exercise are:
  • Cardiovascular benefits - lowers total cholesterol, lowers the bad LDL cholesterol, raises the good HDL cholesterol, decreases blood pressure, decreases frequency of heart disease.
  • Immune system benefits - decreases number and severity of colds and flu, decreases rates of cancer.
  • Digestive benefits - improves digestion, cures constipation.
  • Blood sugar benefits - helps normalize levels, preventing or controlling hypoglycemia and adult diabetes.
  • Obesity - increases use of calories at rest (with a carry-over effect to the next day!), increases muscle-to-fat ratio, routine use over years cures obesity.
  • Mental health benefits - lowers stress, elevates mood, enhances sense of well being, eases depression and grief.
  • Sexuality benefits - enhances sexual enjoyment, regular use enhances sexual attractiveness.
  • Miscellaneous benefits - improves body odor, decreases tendency to abuse damaging drugs, alcohol and tobacco, increases average life span, improves quality of life (especially in later years).I'd call exercise the ULTIMATE anti-aging "drug."

Philip Santiago, DC, DACBSP and a member of the Academy of Anti-Aging noted recently that "People who are physically fit, eat a healthy, balanced diet and take nutritional supplements can measure out to be 10 to 20 years younger biologically than their chronological age."
So why doesn't everyone use this miracle "drug", especially since it's inexpensive and readily available? The answer is that you can't just go out and buy a bottle. Everyone has to put in time and effort to get their own personal supply.
It doesn't matter if you were physically active in your younger years. If you're not currently engaged in a physical-activity program on a regular basis (including dancing!), your body is not receiving the innumerable health-related benefits of exercise.
Take another look at the list of benefits. Start taking the steps now toward better health. Even little baby steps like you took long before you learned to dance will pay tremendous dividends long-term.

The "Reality" of the "Matrix" of Unreality

Some of us live in our own so-called "Reality" which in actuality is a "Matrix" of Unreality.  They choose to ignore the problems of the world, to turn their shoulders on their brothers and sisters of the human race, to believe what they are hand held in small dosages by media outlets controlled by a handful of companies, believing that politicians have their best interests in mind, and for refusing to believe they are not controlled by the Corporatocracy.

When I look around me at my peers and the so-called “reality” they live; I sometimes find myself in utter disbelief leading to a near trance like state of depression.  Why? The vast majority of us are so caught up in our own "reality" which is built on materialism, greed, fear, obesity, addiction, narcissism, and overconsumption we are too busy to notice the misfortunes of those not only in other less fortunate areas of the World we share, but to those we encounter each and every day.  We choose to ignore and escape to our “realities” which are a comforting part of the “matrix” of unreality each of us creates.

People are worried about what car they drive, clothes they wear, what trendy club they go to and spend hundreds and in some cases thousands of dollars to consume a poison that is socially accepted, men having numerous watches which cost more than the amount it would take to feed hundreds if not thousands of starving children, women apply cosmetics in amounts that cost more than it would to keep a child from dying of thirst, we waste, we pollute, then we only pretend to care because it is the "in" thing to do.  Meanwhile we never answer or seek to ask the real question, "What can I be doing to help"?
Open your consciousness and be awakened to the reality of the world.
